‘JL Snyder’

bc2Today, I’d like to welcome JL Snyder, author of “Battle Cry 2” to The Thursday Interview. Before we get started, a quick intro!

Jeffrey (JL) Snyder is an avid reader of fiction as well as comic book/graphic novel fiction. Many of the books that line his shelves are written by top author/artists Doug Tennapel, Michael Avon Oeming and Jeff Lemire. He is a self taught artist who is also fond of the Japanese Manga style of drawing. As a writer of fiction, Snyder enjoys walking in the footsteps of the characters he creates. Snyder earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing from the University of Texas at El Paso. Battle Cry is his first novel.

No.1 Would you break the law to save a loved one? .. why? That’s a very odd and interesting question. If their life and safety depended on it, yes I would. Who wouldn’t try to save a loved one if they had the chance to do so?

No.2 What is the difference between being alive and truly living? Being alive to me means that you are just going through the motions of life. You aren’t really enjoying it. On the other hand, living life means that you are enjoying it to the fullest. You are taking control of what you do, how you do it and who you spend time with. The world is such a beautiful place. Life is truly a gift we must always strive to enjoy everyday, experience different things and visit different places in the world.

No.3 What motivates you to write? When I write, I enjoy slipping into the world of the characters I create. Writing allows me to escape the fast paced and often hectic world that we live in. As a writer, just as in life you control your own destiny. But you also create the world, circumstances, people you encounter, rules, action and events that take place in the story. Who can honestly say that they have the ability and power to do all of this in their real lives?

No.4 Why do humans want children? Since I don’t have children of my own, I’m not sure that I can give a valid answer to the question. But, I will try. Many times, I think that people want children so that they can continue their family heritage and name.

No.5 What was the biggest challenge in creating your book ”Battle Cry 2” ? Time has always been my greatest enemy when it comes to writing. Writing isn’t my full time job. I need to go to work Monday through Friday like most people. If I could avoid working full time, trust me I would. Then I would have much more time to write.

No.6 What is the most important thing you have learned in life so far? Never give up. Never quit doing something that you love to do. Never give up on others as well. Many times we lose hope in others, especially those closest to us. We all make mistakes or do things we regret, so I try not to give up on anyone.

No.7 How did you come up with the title “Battle Cry 2” ? It actually took a while to come up with the title. I eventually came up with the title, Battle Cry, because of the horrible fate that the main character was dealt in her life. Her suffering and struggle to deal with the truth about her father’s death is what drives her. She believes her destiny is to avenge her father’s death. Like her father before her and many other samurai warriors, she shouts a battle cry when going into battle.

No.8 How do you handle personal criticism? I’d like to think that I handle it well. But, you would probably have to ask people that I know whether it is true or not.

No.9 Why should people read your book? I truly believe that Battle Cry is unlike any other book in the market. It’s a moving coming of age tale with action and adventure. The combination of narrative story telling and manga/comic book style pictures and action words creates a book that is inviting to various types of readers.

No.10 Why is there something rather than nothing? I always try to look at the positive side of things. Having something for me gives me motivation to continue to work towards getting more of that something.

Thank you Jeffrey 🙂
